Choosing Trees and Shrubs

  • Functions of Trees & Shrubs
    • Trees and shrubs serve many functions in your garden landscape.
    • They can act as a windbreak, stopping strong gusts.
    • They offer privacy by forming a natural fence.
    • A low hedge helps define or border spaces.
    • They provide shade, which may reduce energy costs.
    • They give a habitat for wildlife and birds.
    • Trees and shrubs also help clean our air and provide oxygen.
  • Differences Between A Tree and A Shrub
    • A shrub has several main stems growing from ground level rather than one main trunk.
    • Shrubs usually have a height less than 10-13 ft. (3-4 m.) and stems no more than 3 inches (7.5 cm) in diameter.
    • Trees have one erect stem (trunk) and a clearly formed crown of leaves (foliage).
    • There are of course exceptions such as a river birch, a tree with multiple stems, and bushes trained into a tree form.
  • Things to Consider When Choosing Your Tree or Shrub
    • Size – How big will the tree or shrub grow in terms of height and width?
    • What else is in the area? – Any overhead wires, buildings, or other plants.
    • How many cumulative hours of sun the location receives.
    • Your soil conditions. – Is the area wet or dry? Does the plant need acidic soil to thrive?
    • Hardiness – Will it work in your area or zone?
    • What is the tree or shrub’s function? – Will it provide shade, a focal point, a barrier.
    • Do you want colour all year round? – Deciduous tree or evergreen tree.
    • Would you like a flowering tree or shrub?
    • How much time are you willing to invest in the care and maintenance? – Cleaning up dropped fruit or berries, trimming.
    • Leaf shape and size – What appeals to your personal aesthetic?
    • The watering needs of the tree or shrub.
  • Examples of Shrubs
    • Hydrangea
    • Ninebark
    • Spirea
    • Forsythia
    • Potentilla
