What is Over-Seeding?
- Applying turf grass seed into existing lawns without removing existing sod or soil.
Why Over-Seed?
- Established lawns become worn out, grow weeds, and develop brown spots.
- Enhances the lawns ability to fight against insects and diseases.
- Over-seeding ensures lawn stays green, looks thicker and healthier, and revives worn spots.
When Is the Best Time to Over-Seed?
- Late summer or early fall. Weed competition is low, and soil and atmosphere temperatures are optimal for seed germination and growth.
- Fall seeding should be done at least 45 days before your average first fall frost.
- Spring is the next best time after fall to over-seed.
How Do You Determine the Appropriate Seed Type for the Area?
- Use appropriate seed type for climate and lawn use, whether it’s is a high-use zone or primarily aesthetic.
- Check the hours of sun the area gets within a day and choose the variety of seed or seed mix accordingly.

Application

Preparing the Area for Over-Seeding?
- Correct old problems such as soil compaction, improper drainage, and incorrect grass variety.
- Mow lawn two inches or shorter and remove clippings so new seed can contact soil and get sun and water.
- Remove thatch.
- Use a drop-type spreader (fertilizer spreader). Set the spreader to the over-seeding rate as recommended on the bag of grass seed then load the seeds into the hopper. Simply walk, pushing the spreader, releasing the seed as you go, refilling the hopper as necessary. When you are finished seeding it is recommended to apply a starter fertilizer for better results.
- It is a good idea to combine lawn aeration with over-seeding as the holes created by aeration allows for good soil-to-seed contact. This aids seed germination.
How Much Seed Should Be Applied?
- Depends on the type of grass. Follow label recommendations.
When Do You Put Down Amendments Such as Compost?
- Before applying seed if you are not using an over-seeding product with amendments included
When Do You Need to Rake in the Seed?
- Rake in seeds after application if desired.
When Should Starter Fertilizer Be Used?
- If a soil test shows phosphorous is low in your current soil, a starter fertilizer may be useful for the tiny roots of the new grass.

Aftercare and Expectations

Lawn Care After Over-Seeding
- Day Of – Water thoroughly. Continue to water once or twice per day until grass seeds germinate. The key is to keep the seeds moist. Never let the seeds get completely dried out.
- General Care – Water as usual after germination. Mow the lawn once it reaches 2-3 inches. Continue to mow to a height of 2 inches for the remainder of the season.
How to Mow After Over-Seeding
- Do not mow until the new seed has germinated and grown to 2-3 inches in height. Otherwise, you may pick up loose seed and underdeveloped grass.
How Can You Minimize Loss of Seeds to Wildlife?
- Place burlap or gardening fabric over seeded areas to help keep birds and wildlife away from seeds.
What Can You Expect in The First Year?
- New seeds will germinate and fill in sparse areas.
- Lawn will look fuller and healthier.
