• Gardening Is Good for You

Keeping a garden is a great hobby and adds significantly to the curb appeal of your home. On top of the beauty, there are a number of other benefits that gardening provides.

    Gardening Improves Your Health

Gardening has a variety of benefits that will help you live a better and more healthy life.

    • Stress Relief – After spending our days focusing on work, paying attention to stressful activities, and staring at emails and cell phones, taking some time to unwind with something that we can casually direct our attention to helps to relieve some of the built-up stress we have, improving our mood overall. Spending time outdoors and enjoying nature helps to reduce the stress hormone cortisol, making us feel better.
    • Exercise – When you’re out gardening, you get to be out in the fresh air and sunlight getting your body moving and blood pumping. All the regular activities involved with gardening such as digging, weeding, and planting are great low-impact exercises for anybody, but especially those who have chronic pain or disabilities.
    • Mental Health – Gardening has been shown to improve depression symptoms. In a study where individuals that had been diagnosed with depression, low mood, and bipolar disorder spent six hours a week gardening, half of the participants experienced significant mood improvements within three months.
    • Brain and Cognitive Health – Research has shown that the physical activity involved when gardening can possibly help lower the risk of developing dementia. Studies found that individuals in their 60s and 70s who gardened regularly had a 36%-47% lower risk of dementia than those who didn’t garden. This suggests that the mental and physical activity involved in gardening can positively impact the brain.
    • Nutrition – Studies have shown that people who garden tend to eat more fruits and vegetables than those who don’t. Home gardens are often filled with fruits and vegetables, and freshly grown foods from your garden are some of the healthiest foods you can eat.
